What’s in the way of your grief healing?
What’s in the way of your grief healing?
What if what’s in the way is the best part of the way?
Somehow… one day… we woke up in this land of grief without ever having agreed to go on this journey. We never bought a ticket here or registered for a passport. We don’t know how we ended up in this place that looks nothing like our old life. We wake up every morning with a sigh because we haven’t been magically transported back to the life we knew and loved. And while we try to make the best of where we have landed, the truth of the matter is: all we want… is to get out!
How can we get out of here? There are no rules, no guides. There is no “right” way. All we know is that everything hurts — from our body to our thoughts to the idea of moving forward. It’s all standing in the way of getting us out of this place we never wanted to be in the first place.
But what if all of these things that are weighing us down, and that are in the way of our healing, are actually supposed to be PART of our way out of grief? The things that hurt us the most, and the events that are the most challenging, are the very things that will grow us the most, teach us the most and heal us the most. And I know… we mostly… just don’t want to be here.
So since we’re stuck here anyway, let’s try and find a way out. This week, let’s make a “Let’s get out of here” list. Write a list of everything that is keeping you from your healing.
What would be on that list?
Cleaning out a closet, finding a grief group, buying a journal or simply allowing yourself the permission to sit down, get quiet, cry and allow yourself to grieve.
Write it all down, every last thing you can think of that’s keeping you locked in this land. Once you’re done, flip that piece of paper over and close your eyes and take a moment to give gratitude for that crazy list. Each one of those tasks actually makes up your roadmap to healing. One by one, each of those tasks will strengthen you, vitalize you and help bring you to the destination you were meant to be at all along. And like any good itinerary, one step will lead you to the next. As you complete each task, you will find more energy and motivation to see what the next place holds. You may travel alone or with friends. Decide what feels right for you depending on which stop you are at along your travels.
Grief is a journey that will bring you to a new land that you never knew you needed to explore. Once you arrive in this new found place beyond grief, you will wonder why you ever needed to take THAT path to get there. And then you will become acutely aware of the strength, the endurance, the confidence and the appreciation that you gained all along the way and give gratitude for a perfectly executed itinerary for a trip that you never want to take again.
